Missouri to offendees: let them whine

THURSDAY 5-29-08…Lawmakers in Missouri aren’t afraid of alienating Latinos and “moderates.” They’re simply doing what they know is right. Lawmakers gave final approval last week to a bill that adds new restrictions and requirements for illegal immigrants, the cities in which they live and the businesses that employ them.

The bill would require people to prove they are U.S. citizens or are legally in the country when applying for food stamps, housing and other public benefits; penalize businesses that knowingly hire illegal immigrants; order the Missouri state Highway Patrol to seek special federal immigration training, and bar Missouri cities from refusing to cooperate with federal immigration authorities.

The House approved the measure 136-12, and the Senate followed suit with a 27-7 vote, sending it to Republican Governor Matt Blunt who has made passing the legislation a priority.

Why is it that Governor Schwarzenegger (and John McCain) are so afraid of losing the Latino and “moderate’s” votes that they’re unwilling to do what’s right, and opt instead for “re-branding” Republicans as Republicrats. In so doing, they’re casting good, hardworking Conservative Republicans adrift.

Proposition 187, a 1994 ballot initiative here in California, designed to deny social services, health care and public education to illegal aliens passed with 58.8 percent of the vote. Opponents shopped around until they found an activist judge who overturned the vote, which in effect told the voters their will doesn’t count. Yet, it’s the voting public’s money that has to pay for all the freebies. Our votes didn’t count. Our state’s Attorney General refused to file an appeal.

In Missouri, they’re not worried about political expediency. They’re just doing what’s right.

  1. I’d say Missouri is doing what works. This isn’t a race issue, Latinos are smart enough to know that.
